Game cartridge missing ridges and cannot be read?

Picked up a lot of various games but one in particular was a switch cartridge for Dragon Ball Z The Breakers and looks like a repair was already attempted. The fins in between the pins of the cartridge are missing entirely but does not affect the cart being inserted and seated or removed. However, cart is not able to be read, causing the switch to lock and unable to even say that there is a game inserted. Has anyone encountered this issue?

Hi Jon!

I know that Switch games are really difficult to repair.

First thing is, is that there are almost no replacement parts are available for Switch games. So you need another “Dragon Ball the Breakers” game to get the components off.

2nd thing is, there are some components “protected” by Nintendo preventing to let the game work, when you swap some IC’s.

Sometimes I do repair DS games, like the Pokémon games. Sometimes the save chip (writable memory) failed and need to be replaced. Like, when it doesn’t want to save anymore. You do need to solder a new chip in. For this I do need another Pokémon game (for example Pokémon Heart Gold and Pokémon Soul Silver, the save chip is interchangeable).

For the “old” DS games this was possible. But when changing the actual ROM IC, the game failed. So some components can be replaced, but not all of them.. For the Switch it was even more difficult.

So,, I think you are better of to return it and get a refund, if possible! And get yourself a working game. It’s possible that you can repair it, but you do need the exact same game with other issues, so you can try to swap some components over to see if it works..

Sorry for the bad news! Hopefully you can get a refund!

What if I just need to replace the plastic for the Nintendo switch game?

That can be done! You need to pry it open. Then swap the PCB to the new shell. The only thing is, it’s hard to find those. So best thing to do is to buy a broken game with a good shell. Then put it in there and glue it. This is the only thing you can do!
