Why won't my laptop detect my new battery?

The original battery in my laptop died and I ordered and installed what I understood to be a compatible battery (Lenovo 01AV409 56Wh Battery) ******from Ifixit. My computer doesn't detect the new battery, though the computer will run on battery power. (I assume it isn't charging, though I have no way of knowing.) I'm running Windows 10.

Here's everything I've tried so far, rebooting each time:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled new battery
  • Tried to scan hardware and update drivers in Lenovo Vantage (No battery is detected, so there's nothing to scan, and I can't update the bios firmware without a detected battery.)
  • Pushed in the reset button for 30 seconds using a paperclip, with the AC adaptor unplugged
  • Manually deleted and installed current battery driver
  • Reset BIOS system configuration by loading defaults in the BIOS setup utility

The only other thing I can think to try is to use Lenovo's USB Recovery tool to create a USB recovery key and reinstall Windows on the computer, but before I do that, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue or can offer a solution. Thanks in advance!

@waterprof before you removed your old battery, did you check if that was recognized and if your computer tried to charge it? I wonder if this is not a charging system error vs a battery or software issue. Have you tried to reinstall your old battery to see if your computer recognizes that one? If so, it is most likely a faulty battery.

Your computers charging port should be a USB-C type. Get a USB-C meter and see how many V and A it pulls when you connect it.

@oldturkey03, thanks for the reply! My old battery was the original and worked for many years without issue, and then suddenly I received an error message that said it could not be charged and to replace it. The battery icon on the bottom right of the screen perpetually showed 94% charged, but if I unplugged the AC adaptor the computer would instantly shut off and I would get the same error message when I restarted. I haven't tried reinstalling my old battery, but from what I've read, if Lenovo's batteries detect an issue, they shut off and don't allow any reset or additional charging. That said, I'll try what you suggested and see if it's recognized (i.e., if I get the same error message), then reach out to Ifixit.

In response to your last comment, the laptop's charging port is actually a rectangular “slim-tip” type.

@waterprof sounds like a great idea. I would definitely give it a try with the old battery and after that give the great iFixit staff a holler. See what they can come up with. If it is a battery issue, then they will make it right as rain :-)
