Which Portable air conditioner Capacitor needed

Hi all,

I have a portable A/C and am having trouble finding a replacement capacitor. I do not know what the numbers mean and what would work. I searched the main number on amazon but lots of variants show (voltage etc). Could somebody help by directing me to one which would work please. I have added a photo of the one in the AC showing all the number.

Any help is very much appreciated

That Amazon one would work, no problem. Here are a couple more eBay.ca ones that you could use as well. The first one matches your specs exactly and the second one is also a 450VAC one like the Amazon model.

I ordered the one from Amazon. Will let you know how things go. Thanks again for your help!

@gazz92970, It would help if we could see the type of terminals on this capacitor, but in general any 50uF capacitor that's rated for at least 250 VAC will work. Here's a used one from eBay that's rated for 450 VAC that would substitute just fine.

SoleusAir PE2-10R-32 Portable Air Conditioner Main Capacitor CBB65 50UF 450V - eBay

Here's one from Amazon that will slip right in with no problems; the specs are pretty much exactly the same as yours.

COCAPCO CBB65 250VAC 50uF Run Capacitor 50MFD 50 uF MFD 250V AC SH B.P2/S2 50x76mm 40/70/21 UL Listed: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Actually, forget the used one; here's a new one on eBay that'll work too.

CBB65 Run Capacitor 50uF 50MFD 50 uF MFD 250VAC 250V AC SH B.P2/S2 50x76mm UL - eBay

There are many others out there that are even cheaper, but they don't come right out and spell out the shipping right up front like Amazon and eBay do, so you'd have to factor that into your ordering. Just use this search string on Google and you'll find lots to pick from.

CBB65 SH 50uF 250VAC capacitor

Here are the numbers you have to pay attention to:

  • VAC rating has to be at least 250 or higher, never lower.
  • uF must match; yours is a 5% tolerance meaning it can range from 47.5uF up to 52.5uF so get one that has that same 5% or lower tolerance; e.g., you can use 2% or 1% but not 10% or 20%

That should get you going; good luck and let us know how it all turns out!

Thanks Jerry, I have added a 2nd pic. If possible could you please share a link of where to buy the correct one in Canada please. I tried looking for the one on Amazon but could not find it on Amazon.ca. I have edited my main post and added a link to one on Amazon, could you take a look please and let me know if it would work. Also, does the 40/85/21 have an importance?.

Your help is really appreciated.

Thanks again

Hi Jerry, The part arrived today but unfortunately it is too long. Another thing, I did still want to test to make sure this would fix the problem but I do not know where the wires go. There is nothing written or stamped on or near the terminals. Could you advise please. The original one has 2 terminals (4+4) lines. The replacement has 2 terminals 4+2 lines. I have added some more photos. Thanks

@gazz92970 The capacitor you're using is non-polarized, meaning it can be connected either way. So as long as you keep the wires that go to each terminal together, you can plug them in to either one on the original or the replacement capacitor. The number of plugs on each terminal is irrelevant as long as you have enough for the number of wires you have.

@gazz92970 With regard to size, yeah, that's a pretty big difference between the two. If you can figure out how to mount it inside pretty much anywhere it'll work, but if there just isn't room you'll need to measure the diameter and height and then we can find one based on your physical dimensions.

Well Jerry, hooked it up, switched on the portable AC and no different so it is not the capacitor which is the issue. What happens is, I turn it on, It hums and the fan does not spin. I push the fan just a little and it starts spinning & all works. Would this now mean it is the motor or do you know if it could it be something else. Again, I appreciate your help
