Touch 3g 32gb White screen and sync question

Our autistic son closed the car door on his 32gb 3g Touch today.

Glass screen looks to be intact no obvious signs of damage. Slight dent in rear case. Unit lights up with bright white screen but that's all.

Loaded Itunes and Itunes sees device and contents.

2 Questions;

1 Having looked at every page and problem here I'm thinking the problem lies with the LCD rather than the screen(digitizer) would I be correct in my assumption?

2 Before attempting any repair I would like to try and preserve all data on the ipod touch just in case anything should go wrong. There is not enough hard drive space left on the original computer the touch is synced to. Our son now has a new computer can we sync the touch to it before we try to fix the white screen issue if so how do we do it.

We are not particularly clued up on Itunes or Apple devices so your help here would be much appreciated.

Our sons life revolves around his Ipod Touch so we are praying we can get his device fixed without losing 3 years worth of his drawings, music and pictures.

Is this site still active? I would of expected that after 6 days of this question being posted, I would of received at least one answer.

There is nothing you can do. You have to replace the screen.

sorry for the delay here on the site, from what i read i seem the only help i can do isback up your data on your itouch.

plug into a computer that has iTunes and enough disk space to hold the data.

because you are using a different computer to accesses the itouch the backup will be raw data from the itouch itself, this data can only be used on most apple products.

goto itunes while the device is pluged in.

then at the device menu your going to want to check "on" disk mode.

once this is done, the device should pop up in "My Computer"

from there you can directly move the Raw files out of the itouch.

For example if you get a new itouch you can turn on disk mode and put back the raw data and it will be like the old one in every way.

Hi, Thank you for the info. Your answer now leads me to wonder how if it is only raw data can I get it back on the itouch once it has been repaired? Is it just as simple a sync-ing it?

Hi again looks like the problem is worse than I thought, changed the lcd not quite as easy as I thought but got there in the end. Result still only getting a white screen and computer still sees the itouch and sees the data. 2 questions; 1) What's the chance of the new lcd being faulty? 2) If not the lcd what else could be wrong?

Options

Make a backup of the device with itunes. Buy another iPod touch and restore the backup of the defect iPod on the new one. I've done this from my 3th 32GB to my new 4th 64Go and all went good.
