Background
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is a CPU, GPU, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and, high performance computing component developer, and system-on-chip designer, founded in 1969, USA. AMD has throughout the decades operated in the RAM, microcomputer, EPROM, DRAM, flash-memory and other markets. AMD currently focuses on high performance and cloud computing, data centers, AI acceleration, supercomputers such as LUMI, digitization in the automotive industry with processing and AI integration, and FPGA developments, such (through Xilinx, acquired 2022) powering NASA's Perserverance rover for computer vision and AI on Mars.
AMD began as a second-source supplier, manufacturing licensed microchips. In 1970, AMD released its first proprietary products, the Am9300 4-bit shift register and the Am2501 logic counter. AMD entered the microprocessor market with the Am9080 in 1975, an unlicensed copy of Intel's 8080 processor. AMD and Intel have since had long rivalries and partnerships. In 1976, AMD and Intel commenced a cross-licensing agreement of their microprocessor's microcode. IBM required a second-source manufacturer for an Intel processor contract, which AMD satisfied in 1982, a license agreement which lasted until 1995. They have been rivals ever since.
AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006, who had produced video cards since the 1980s and introduced the Radeon family in the year 2000. AMD continued using the ATI brand for GPUs until 2010, when it rebranded the Radeon 6000 series under the AMD name.
AMD's RDNA architecture was introduced in 2019, alongside the Radeon RX 5000 series GPUs. First generation RDNA used TSMC N7, matched the 32 execution threads to the 32 SIMD slots size, and introduced per cycle issued instructions. RDNA 2, released in 2020, introduced hardware ray tracing and improved power efficiency that facilitated higher clock speeds. RDNA 2 is used in the Playstation 5, Xbox series X and S, and the Steam Deck. By 2022, RDNA 3 introduced multi-chip module design and hardware AI accelerators. RDNA 4, released in 2025, used TSMC's N4 technology, and brought improvements in ray tracing, AI acceleration, and performance.
Identification
AMD does generally not distribute Radeon graphics cards directly, but licenses to board partners for the manufacturing of the Radeon GPUs.
