Background:
The Acer Predator Triton 700 is an ultra-thin premium gaming laptop from 2017. The Acer Predator Triton 700 (Model PT715-51) features an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor paired with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q graphics card, 32GB DDR4-2400MHz memory, all displayed on a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display at 120Hz. All of that is housed within a 18.9mm thick aluminum chassis. The Triton 700 sold for $2,999 at launch.
The Predator Triton 700 was aimed at professional gamers and power users who require high performance in a portable form factor. The laptop was directly targeted to those users who needed to travel with a high-performance system. The price point was a high barrier for many, and casual and budget conscious gamers were excluded from Acer’s targeted demographic.
The Predator Triton 700 was a part of Acer’s Triton lineup, which included other models like the Predator Triton 500. The 700 series was one of the first to properly implement NVIDIA’s Max-Q technology, which dynamically adjusted GPU performance and power consumption. This laptop competed directly with others at the time, and sparked conversations about the placement of the touchpad, which was moved above the keyboard. The Predator Triton 700 was considered one of the most visually different gaming laptops from the 2017-2019 period.
Despite the design, the Predator Triton 700 had serious thermal issues. These high temperatures resulted in higher fan speeds, which resulted in more noise. Reviewers at the time noted extremely hot surface temperatures that could possibly lead to burns. Acer’s remedies of software updates somewhat mitigated these issues, but many users had to use difficult workarounds. Battery life was considered extremely bad, due to the size of the laptop, and size of the battery itself being 54Wh, which led to approximately 2-3 hours of real world usage.
Identification:
The Acer Predator Triton 700 can be identified by the PREDATOR logo and text on the top of the laptop. Flipping the laptop over, the label on the bottom specifies the device’s model number and manufacture date.
