iMac screen won't light up after HDD replacement

This is the iMac 11,2 with a 3.2GHz processor

Followed this guide to replace a failing HDD.

When I reassembled the iMac and booted up, I got a grey screen followed by vertical colored stripes. So I took the machine back apart and found two bent pins on the data display cable, and that it's retaining clip was loose. Smoothed out the pins, and plugged it back into the board without incident.

Unfortunately, now there's no LED backlight coming on and nothing at all on the display. Not much of an improvement, there.

I saw in the comments on the HDD replacement guide that a loose LCD thermal sensor cable connector could be the cause, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Any advice on what to try next?

Checked the diagnostic LEDs on the logic board. Lights 1, 2, and 3 are glowing green. The fourth stays dark.

Sounds like you created a short and the back light fuse is blown. To double check take a flash light and hold it a steep angle to the face of the display do you see the faint outline of your desktop icons? If you do your in luck, if not sorry to say you have a bigger problem.

Are you able to solder very small chips? You'll need to desolder and re-solder the fuse. Are you up to this or do you think it's time to bring it in to someone who has the skills and the right gear?

Let us know what you find and your direction moving forward.

I tried the flashlight trick last night and couldn't see any icons or images. May not have been looking in exactly the right place though - since I'm booting from CD (due to the unformatted, replacement HDD).

Plan to check the diagnostic LEDs tonight as a next step.

From the LED's the GPU & panel are not communicating. Try replacing the cable otherwise the logic board will need to be replaced (broken connector). IT might be possible to replace the connector but it does take very good soldering skills to do it correctly.

Thanks for the advice. Tried reconnecting the cable tonight (some pins are still a bit bent, but no luck. Ordered a replacement cable so will give that a try when it comes in.

A replacement cable did the trick. Everything now works well. Thanks to everyone for advice.
