Nvidia GPU reports very high temperature!

Hi,

I own an Acer Aspire 5745G 6323 laptop( Intel core i7 740Q, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 420M) For the past 4 months, the temperature of my GPU is being shown as 235 degree centigrade( Verifyed from CPU-z and in linux) Further, no game works at more than 2-3 FPS. Added to this, My screen crashes once in a while. My local Acer service center hasn't been able to give a lead(In India). Any help is appreciated

Often an over heating CPU or GPU is poor heat dissipation. Start with the basics are the vents clear and is the internal fan running? If not you'll need to clean and/or replace the fan as well as the clean the vents & heat sink fins.

If this doesn't help you'll need to replace the thermo paste between the GPU & the heat sink (will likely need to do the CPU as well). Make sure to use a good quality paste.

If that still doesn't help then it's possible you have some other problems which will likely need a new logic board or have a process that is running wild causing the CPU/GPU to over work.

The fan in my acer 5742G quit working altogether and since this was a common problem in this model, acer was and will be permanently out of stock for this fan. I installed iobit driver booster free (for other reasons) which couldn't update the nvidia drivers for around six months but when they were updated the fan started working again....

@grupperhans the ssd makes no noise at all when running (no moving parts) however when working in the computer you may have caused the fan to lose some of the dust on it, if this happens the fan becomes unbalanced and makes noise . Try cleaning out the vents with compressed air blowing both ways through the fan Or you can try cleaning it with a vacuum with a plastic hose, dont use a metal one as it can cause static discharge that can cause damage to the laptop
