Replace 500GB-HD with Dual system of 240GB-SSD & 1TB Hybrid Drive?

Hi

I have a Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro.

I currently have an internal 500GB hard drive (5400RPM) that I want to remove and replace with a Dual Hard Drive System.

I have bought a 240GB SSD which I plan on putting in the HD bay, and a 1TB Hybrid Drive which I was going to put in the optical drive (using a drive caddy).

I want to use the SSD as the system (application)/ boot drive, with the Hybrid being the media and file storage hard drive.

What I would like to know is how to handle the software side of the set up. I can't simply clone my current HD onto the new SSD as it is half the size.

I have bought a USB enclosure so know that I could install the SSD and Hybrid, and then boot externally from my old 500GB HD, I just don't know what to do from here.

Basically any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

We gave up doing the dual drive setup on our laptops and moved on to using SSHD's (hybrid HD with SSD in a single unit). Seagate makes a good one, Here's the spec sheet on the Seagate SSHD drive Laptop SSHD Note it can work with SATA I, II & III. We use the 1TB drive.

The I/O of the optical drive is slower than the main drive and does not support HD crash protection. Which you may want to consider here.

You also don't need to deal with a dual volume setup issue you're now facing.

If you still want to do the dual drive setup you'll need to install the OS and your apps onto the SSD via the external USB connection before swapping out the optical drive. Then you can delete the applications from your HD.

Hi, so the Seagate worked in the optical caddy? I've been trying that in my iMac but the drive seems dead when in the caddy. It's fine in a USB caddy though, but iFixit are saying they don't know what drives work or don't...

Suspect I have a dud caddy but can't say for sure.

The issue you are likely facing here is the optical drive SATA port is not as fast as the HD SATA port. Here's a good writeup from OWC and it also applies to IFIXIT's part as well. Review the bottom of the page the text in Red: OWC Data Doubler. Sadly, this is one of many reasons we stopped doing the dual drive setup.

Thanks very much for that. I'll maybe persevere with it as a backup drive then if I can get a plain old HDD to run it it.

Options

Connect your new Large media drive to your computer and move all of your media to the large drive removing it from your current boot drive. This will decrease the amount of info on your old HDD and allow you to clone it. Install both new drives and direct your boot drive programs to look for the files on you media drive.
