Why auto play DVDs will not play?

I installed the laptop dual drive kit into my 2010 Mac book Pro and everything works fine except auto run disc will not play. I get a error message" There was a initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found – 70012".

Also, if I try to open the DVD player app from the dock I get the same message.

The disc show up in the Finder but I just can't play them!

Can you give us the make & model of the unit you put in. Also where did you get the drive.

Ahh if you've removed your optical drive and put in a HDD or SSD that's why you can't autoplay a DVD - there's no place to put it (Valid DVD drive could not be found).

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I had though of that too, but he claims he see's the DVD in the finder, so clearly something is present.

AFAIK Apple DVD player will not work with an external DVD player, excepting the MBA's or new MBPs with no DVD drive. which will work with the Apple OEM external drive. Once upon a time in the past there was an extension you could use to get the finder (Burner) to work with non-OEM or external drives. Other media players such as VLC or MPlayer OS X Extended will readily read any mounted DVD disc, or at least allow you to target the "Video_TS" folder on the DVD that holds the movie media.

Yes, to clarify, I replaced the optical drive with a 1TG drive. When I use the optical drive with the cable supplied with the dual drive kit I get the problem. The cable allows you to use the optical drive you removed as a stand alone drive. I wish IFIXIT instructions would have warned me before hand about the problem. BTW, all parts and drives came from IFixit.

So if I understand correctly, I need to use a different media player?

Thanks!

You understood what I said about external DVD players correctly.

Yes, thanks.

What I don't get is that new Macs are coming without a DVD drive now, so you need to buy a external superdrive to play CD/DVD's. So they can not play auto play disk either?

If I had understood the problem I am not sure I would make the change.

Yes Apple has been on a "loose the Optical Disk crusade" since about 2008, other vendors are following especially on mobile platforms, last year event the MacPro lost a place for a "built in" optical drive. . . You can either share a drive from an existing Mac or you will need an external drive. Users are watching more streaming video than disk. FWIW TOAST for Mac is great at working with a number of external optical disk types including Blu-Ray. - For future reference you posted a Comment in the place where only Answers belong.
