4MOT/1/40000002: Exhaust ... Fan problem?

My computer turns off because the fan is not working. Before the failure, it was really noisy.

4MOT/1/40000002: Exhaust I got this message after running the hardware test (using a fan, and under air conditioning).

Replacing the computer's fan should be enough? or does that message implies something else? Should I also look into the heating sink?

Thanks in advance!

Don't bother with the heatsink or thermal paste. The issue you are having with the computer is related to the fan. The computer is getting too hot and without a fan to cool it down it powers off as a fail safe. If there were an issue with the heatsink or thermal paste you would have gotten an error during the hardware test indicating a bad temp sensor or processor overheating.

Also, if you do attempt to replace the thermal paste. (which is not necessary at all) make sure you clean off the old paste on the processors and the heatsink with alcohol wipes before applying the new paste.

Jethro, I just finished changing the fan, did not messed with the heatsink or the paste. There was a lot of dirt inside, so I cleaned it with compressed air. It is working wonderfully...I am so happy! Apple offered me that for $280 they would repair it (not under warranty anymore). So I just saved some bucks, got my machine working (and by the way it is working very quiet like it did a long time ago).

Now...I have the old fan...should I just throw it in the garbage? I wish it could be recycled some how.

This was my first job inside a computer, everything went as expected by the guide...

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! I like this website, it is great!!

Just an update, the macbook (2007) is still working flawlessly since this repair. Actually in all these years other than replacing the battery there has been no issues. What a wonderful machine!

When you install a new fan, make shure to give the thing a thorough clean with compressed air. On the exhaust side of the fan a lot of dust can accumulate, which accelerates the death of fans.

To renew the thermal paste under the heatsink is also a good idea, as the paste dries out with time.

Thanks for the tips...I am pondering if I dare to do or not the thermal paste part. I am already changing the fan...so it would only take me 2 more steps to do it.

I am assuming the heating sink still works because there is temperature measurement (I downloaded a software and I could see the temperature measurement changing over time).

It really does not look that difficult...

thanks.
