Video issue vertical distortion strip

MacBook Air 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 80 GIG ATA 10.5.8

Unit has a 1 3/8 " vertical area of distortion from top to bottom in the center of the screen. I don't have the micro display adapter, currently, to check the GPU on an external. Problem persists when booted from optical drive. There is some play in the hinge, more so on the left side. No noticeable change when moving the screen. Some shooting horizontal white lines within the area, more so when it's the active window. Has anyone seen this before?

I found someone else who asked about a similar issue earlier today on an iMac, no responses there either.

Display screen has white stripe from top to bottom

UPDATE - The unit runs fine on an external. Found this: LED (short for Light emitting diode) is a newer technology in the market. The use of LED over traditional lamp based LCD's eliminates the need for inverter and backlight lamp.

Am still looking for a tear down of the screen.

The MacBook Air has an LED screen? I had no idea.

I have seen something similar, if not identical, on the original MacBook Air (A1237). In my case, it appears to be a loose display connector. By applying moderate pressure with my finger to a point along the bottom side of the display bezel, the area of distortion disappears, at least until pressure is removed. I think the machine was carried from the top with the display open, and this put a strain on the display cable. (Just an educated guess.)

Sounds like you will need a replacement screen. I have had a similar thing happen with some iBooks so I would guess it would be the same solution.

Thanks for that advice but the screen is the last thing that I think it could be. I am still waiting on the micro adapter to arrive to test the GPU. Why do you say it's the screen?

par

Even if the GPU is fine it still could be the inverter and not the display.

Does it have the same problem when you hook it up to an external display?

par

He's waiting for an adapter so he can check that.

I've seen it before on non-Apple laptops, it's almost always the screen, but you might get lucky and it will be the cable connection from the screen to the mainboard.

Hi,

I just wanted to see if there was an update on this thread. I have a similar issue, i have a A1237 and just repaired the right hinge, and after putting it all back together, I get a white screen at start up, and on the right side of the LCD i get vertical multi-colored stripes that run up and down the entire side of the screen.

I wonder if it is as simple as the LCD cable? I hate to tear it back down.

I am also wondering if I applied too much pressure on the LCD screen and caused this issue???

You question will get lost tagging it on to this one and also cause confusion. Your problem and solution may also be very different. Please start a new question. Thanks

Derek, I second that motion. You will get far more responses and help if you ask your own question and give more information than the habitual "me too" does not work on here since nobody is going to look for it on an almost one year old question.

For the record, i did as suggested, created a second post, and got zero replies!

I have the same problem, a 1.5" to 2" distorted strip vertically down the centre of the screen. If you rub it firmly with a screen wipe or soft cloth, the distortion disappears. `unfortunately, I'm having to do this more and more regularly to correct it, and I'm starting to think I might have to get a "proper" repair done. Obviously, I'm concerned about the cost. Anyone had a more permanent fix?

I have the same A1237 vertical stripe that disappears with mild pressure but just as Nick's MBA it keeps coming back. Is there absolutely no fix known yet? One would think a little hack like glue on the connector etc would help? anyone any experience? A screen replacement seems not really economical...

Thanks
