First, restart the laptop to refresh the cursor.

If that doesn't work, go to Control Panel and click on Mice and Pointing Devices. Double click on touchpad and go to Driver's Tab. Click Update Driver and RIGHT click on Touchpad select UNINSTALL.

Then, go to USB controlls and click UNINSTALL on everything except the category itself. Then reboot the machine. This should refresh the TouchPad Driver and USB stack.

Then, go to the System site and download the latest touchpad drivers. Save the file and run it as admin.

I was having the same issue, but I have the Inspiron 5555. I tried EVERYTHING to fix it. Found out it was actually my touchscreen causing the issues. I had to disable the touchscreen in Device Manager, and now my touchpad is working fine. I hope this helps someone and they don’t have to spend HOURS trying everything under the sun to fix their touchpad.

If anyone else has a question like Paul...

Use a USB mouse, just connect it to a USB port.

I had similar problem. It was my touch pad sensitivity that caused the issues as it was on high sensitivity, as soon as I decreased to medium sensitivity, as I was able to click with touchpad
