How does the keyboard communicate with the logic bd?

Can the computer be booted up with the keyboard dis-mounted?

Solution retenue

Yes the MacBook can be powered without the top case attached. Check for the power icon (like the one on the power button) on the logic board at the base of the fan. Under the icon you'll see two small solder pads. Just trip them with a small flat screwdriver after connecting the ac adapter and the MB should start.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to "jump" it and get it to power up, but im not familiar with the technique. As far as how the keyboard communicates with the LB, it through the ribbon cable that goes from the trackpad to the logic board. This guide shows the removal of the topcase and the ribbon in question. When I was working on this machine I would connect the topcase, power the machine on, then remove the connection and topcase. Not sure if this particular model can be "jumped" without the topcase.

To further clarify lemerise's comment, I found the power icon (with a magnifying glass) between the fan and the orange optical drive cable. Worked like a charm!
