Bad logic board. does that mean cpu is dead/ needs replacing?

I was told by a tech that my Macbook Pro is not working as the logic board is bad and needs to be replaced. They are asking $1000 for the job. I see replacement logic boards for a few hundred on ebay. Question - can the cpu be swapped or is it permanent fixed to the board thus I need a new i7 as well?

i am in NYC ... any help or direction would be appreciated.

I would go to the Apple Store and ask them for the flat rate repair for your system. I must warn you time is running out as Apple will soon stop repairing this model so don't delay! If I remember its around $450 so its a lot cheaper!

As to the CPU: Sadly, its soldered to the logic board (not replaceable).

Depending on which model you have in this series, it could have a high resale value (working) in case you are leaning to a newer system.
