I want to replace just the glass on an iPhone 5s, and yes, I understand it is difficult. My question is, does the touchscreen continue to work after the repair, and if it does, how does it work? Thanks in advance.

It is possible. However the possibility of failure is high. If this is a one shot deal, I would just go with the whole display assembly. If you want to work at it, and do it multiple times. Here's a video, should be the complete step by step process. Keep in mind. Continually research this, as there are different methods and options

The touch screen layer appears to be together with LCD. The glass is not however, if you seperate the glass from the screen properly then you should have no issues replacing just the glass, provided that you use the correct glue and put the glass on properly.
Take the following information as a grain of salt below as I've never done glass replacements for a Samsung Galaxy device or iPhones 4 or newer:
- The phone's display has to be heated up to a certain temperature to make the glue on the screen weaker so that you can take it off without cracking the LCD display or damaging the digitizer
- You need to take your time when separating the glass from it. I think using some sort of wire that is ideal to seperate the glue may work.
