Turn a Mac Mini into music storage player for my stereo

I would like to utilize my mac mini 2006 1.6 GHz as an iPod like device to play my own music collection of songs and playlists through my existing stereo system.

I would like to be able to select playlists or specific songs through some type of remote.

Great idea! Sadly, your system is limited here. A newer model would work!

I was using a 2011 model doing this with an iPad as my remote for my TV & movie shows to my TV. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to link in your stereo instead of a TV. I was using: Rowmote Pro on my iPad (it could be an iPhone) accessing iTunes on my mini.

Today I'm using an AppleTV as the front end and controlling it directly from my TV.

Dan - I don't remember when the first machines started using remotes, do you?

I am using a Apple iMac G4/1.0 17-Inch (Flat Panel) as a music server with an external firewire 400 enclosure.

You could use an IR remote since the Mac mini Core Solo model. But, that won't let you see what it's playing or selecting a given song if the mini is headless (assuming you had iTunes running as the default app).

Why not try a DLNA Server or a DLNA Client? For Client, I'll use KODI.

You have the right idea here! I don't know of a good UPnP or DLNA server app that will work on this older system (OS-X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard).

The next issue is what are you using as the client. If the mini is headless then you would need something that will be able to access it over the Ethernet or 802.11g connections it offers. Don't forget he wants a music server here, not a video server, so what would he likely want for a remote an iPad or a smart phone of some sort.

DLNA server supports video and music. And some DLNA server is running under JAVA. No matter what os is using.
