Can you give us the exact model & specs of the processor chip you put in.

This is the specs with the upgrade:

System Information

Operating System Mac OS X 10.11.6 (Build 15G31)

Model iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010)

Processor Intel Core i5-680 @ 3.60 GHz

Processor ID GenuineIntel Family 6 Model 37 Stepping 5

Where did you get this CPU and was it an iMac pull?

Here's the Specs for your original CPU:

- i3-550 Processor (4M Cache, 3.20 GHz)

And here is the specs for your replacement CPU:

- i5-680 Processor (4M Cache, 3.60 GHz)

Is this correct?

I did the same, the iMac didn't even boot properly, I had to use Safe Mode to Log with 10.13.6 . I've tried with I5-680 and I5-650, it does the same thing bootloop 'till I put in the original I3-540 which still works of course.

I was thinking to a microcode update for the mobo but I guess Apple puts these updates in the normal os update...Fact is when I put the upgrade cpus no matter which one, the machine won't boot!

Any suggestion?

EDIT: TDP is 73W

I'm looking at the benchmark scores for that machine on Everymac and yours appears to be way low.

Did you do a test before the upgrade? I'm not sure why you would even do this for a modest 17% increase.

An i7 would be understandable with a 57% bump.

I would have gone with the i7 my self.

That's right, it is very slow. I did the same test with the same program and the results were these :

Geekbench 3.4.1 Tryout for Mac OS X x86 (32-bit)

Intel Core i3-550 @ 3.20 GHz

Single-Core Score 2030 Multi-Core Score 4249

OS X El Capitan

Version 10.11.6

I'd return the i5, it sounds very sick. Then opt out for an i7 from a reputable seller. Also a pull from an iMac. There may be issues we don't know about with other CPUs. Have you by chance changed the hard drive? If ever plan to check with us before buying on as there are known issues.

Nix the i7 I just checked they don't offer one for FCLGA1156 socket. <Sorry>
