Wet Dog Smell from Dyson Vacuum

I accidentally got water into the cyclonic portion of my Dyson alergy. I let it dry from 4 days and now when I use it, it smells like wet dog hair. Is there anyway of removing this smell without replacing the cyclonic canister?

If your Dyson vacuum is emitting an unusual smell, see the Dyson DC58 Emits Unusual Smell problem page for possible causes and solutions.

It might be that the filter got wet and all of the allergens and dirt in the filter are now starting to release an odor. I'd take the filter out and spray it out, let it dry and maybe buy a new one if it’s that bad. Keep us posted.

Thanks John.... unfortunately, I miss worded my question... the filter has been washed and is fine... what the water got into, was actually the cyclonic drum... that is where the odor is coming from. I am going to repost the question.

Is this drum removable? If so I'd remove it and soak it in odor fighting chemicals such as vinegar. Keep us posted.

I had the same problem of wet dog smell after water getting into the cyclonic unit. There is only one way that I know of to get rid of the smell. You have to completely, and I stress completely disassemble the cyclonic unit and clean all parts that are part of the unit. I’ve done it twice but I will never do it again. There are no instructions on the procedure, but it is not that difficult but it’s time consuming. Figure about 6 hrs to disassemble, clean, dry and reassemble. I contacted Dyson but the response was unacceptable. Take it to a service center was there reply. I don’t believe you even have to get the unit wet to end up with wet dog smell. We have a dog that sheds a lot and looking at the base of the vacuum there were some darkened areas that confused me. I believe it’s a combination of the oil from the dogs hair and whatever dirt it comes in contact with. With that being said I did a little research and bought a cheap non hepa Bissell used vacuum to test my theory. After thoroughly cleaning the Dyson cyclonic unit and the rest of the vacuum I vacuumed with the Dyson first and then the cheap Bissell. The amount of dirt and dog hair that I removed from the Bissell was unbelievable. I could go on and on but this response is getting pretty long. I would gladly answer any questions if you have some.

Thanks

Paul

Hi

Iv seen many dysons before and it tends to be 1 of 2 things

1there is damp dust inside of the cyclone

2the filter needs washed(if you tell me the model I can further help you with it)

Chances are that if you left it for 4days to dry it’s the filter needing washed

EDIT:I have see that you am have washed the filter from previous messages and that usually means it’s damp dust that has gathered bad smells

So you can do one of 2 things here

1)dismantle the cyclone ,it’s no too hard but it’s not for everyone

2)remove the cyclone unit from the machine and then the bin from the cyclone and get a big bucket and fill it with hot soapy water and shake and fill the cyclone with the water to clean the inside

Optionally you can use a tap or a garden hose to wash the inside with the cold water and leave to dry for a while until dry

If you have any questions please ask

Thanks:)

just get vacuum cleaner air freshener (deodorizing sticks or scent tablets). keep it when emptying your dyson, and keep using it by hoovering it in again. the bad smell may not vanish completely, but at least is overlaid by the fragrance.

Can't do that in A dyson lol . Hovering with my Dyson, the manual says vacuuming powders it ultra fine sand type materials voids the warranty.
