LCD display went dark

My display flashed a couple of times and the went dark. I can still see an image very very lightly. It work fine with an external display or projector. Any ideas what is wrong?

Brian & Tom -- These would be very good answers if the MacBook Pro 15 Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009 used a LCD or an inverter. The LED backlighting doesnt have an inverter like the ccfl backlight does (this is one of the advantages of led technology).

15.4" color widescreen LED-backlit TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1440 by 900 native resolution. Apple heralded this display as providing "60% greater color gamut" than the earlier "Unibody" MacBook Pro models that this system replaced. By default, the display is "glossy", but starting on August 11, 2009, Apple also began offering this model configured with an "anti-glare" (matte) display for US$50 more.

-yea i was able to figure that out too late, i assumed it still used some type of inverter even thou it's LED, figured it out after posting my answer unfortunately......and I should have known better after having apple replace my entire display not just fix it for this same problem under warranty.

inverter.....or loose connection......bad cable...

tap the display frame lightly, or tilt the display back and forth and see if the backlight comes on, if it does only briefly it might just be a loose cable connection. Testing of the inverter should still be done once it is taken apart.

I am guessing it is no longer under warranty? (since your asking the question).

Just out of warranty. I don't believe it is a loose connection. Is it most likely the inverter?

if there is no loose connection type of issue, with the dark display with information visible when a bright light is on it + the external display works fine, my best "guess" would be a bad inverter, which is a difficult repair. I am told they work different for the newer LED type displays and use less power. They are a couple of other things it might be too, the backlight for one. Also it's possible at least I am fairly sure on the logic board there is a fuse that supply's/regulates the voltage/ current to the backlight circuit (power to the inverter) and that might be bad. It's prob. a very small fuse. If it is bad it should show as an open circuit with a DMM. The first thing would be to diagnose what the problem is, the actual repair would depend on experience and tools needed. Check the display removal guide here for the basic info on LCD disassembly and tools needed. I don't see a guide here for replacing the inverter, unless i missed it.

not sure you can replace the inverter on a unibody model, it may be integrated into the display it's self, since it's an LED screen. (apple just replaces the LCD with a new one under warranty.
