My phone over heats when chargin?

Hey everoyne.

My phone (IPhone 5s) seems to overheat when charging. does anyone else have this problem (or know why it does) I think it may be a battery problem but I have not seen this problem anywhere else.

TIA

Keegan

How long does it take to get very hot when you start charging it? Could be software on the phone doing stuff in the background while charging but if it is it should not occur again the next time you charge.

It usually takes about 2-3 mins, (of being used) and then it gets hot. I never usually get this problem, its a new thing.

I guess that depends on your definition of overheating. Is it warm to the touch or hot or too hot to handle? As a reference point, a hot coffee will be ~60-70C. Is your phone that hot or hotter? That would not be normal.

As Ben says, it could be some background apps running. To test it, close all your apps before you charge and see.

That said, when a battery is discharged, a charging block can deliver 1A of current to the device so it will indeed be warm. Are you using an Apple charging brick (the small square one)? If you are using an iPad brick or a cheap dollar store one, you could be driving too much current. You want to avoid the cheapie ones as they can damage your charging circuit on your phone.

Yeah, this is very well, I was thinking maybe a battery issue, (this still could be the case) thanks

I'd say normal warm during charge is 30°C-40°C and probably around 40°C-50°C if you are using it at the same time when charging from flat or under 50% to 90%.

Absolutely not. Using an ipad charger is perfectly fine as it’s the device that asks the charger for needed current. Apple tells this too. You can even use a Mac charger. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202105
