@kieraj yes it can but you will have to connect something else to it. By that I mean something like Cable or Satelitte TV etc. No, you will not pick up any stations without an aerial.

I don't have the internet just a normal tv aerial on the roof do they still work thanks

Since it is a smart TV it should have internet TV services built in. Such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, just to name some. So, you will not need an aerial, unless you want to watch live TV in your area.

What is the make and model number of your TV?
To connect to internet services the TV needs to be connected to your internet service either by a WiFi connection to your modem/ WiFi router or via an ethernet cable (if this is an option in your TV) to your modem/router

Could you explain it a bit more clearly what you want to do? Not sure what you mean by live TV.
Do you wish to receive OTA (over the air) TV channels or cable TV channels or watch TV channels using the internet?
If OTA you need an aerial.
If cable what is the make and model number of the cable "box"?
if internet what is the make and model number of your modem router?
What is the make and model number of the TV?
Just to watch the news

Have you checked that the antenna is pointed in the best direction to get the strongest signal?
Most TVs show the received TV signal strength as a measurement in their Menu area somewhere and you can check if the signal strength received by the TV increase or decreases by slowly rotating the antenna in one direction or the other.
Do not make radical adjustments of the antenna direction as it will take longer to find the best signal direction.
If you still can’t get a strong enough signal for good reception and if the antenna cable is connected directly to the TV and not to a splitter or any other multiple point, thereby reducing the available signal to the TV, you can install a masthead amplifier - example only in the cable between the antenna and the TV as close to the antenna as possible to boost the incoming signal level for all the channels available and check if this resolves the problem. A masthead amplifier may be sufficient if you do have multiple TV antenna outlets in the premises anyway. Worth a try at least.

Do I need to use an aerial to get Samsung TV and Samsung TV plus. I have sky butcwiukd lije to watch tge free channels it says you get with Samsung smart tv.
Samsung TV and Samsung TV Plus are apps that should be on a Samsung smart TV.
The TV needs to be connected to the internet, for the apps to be able to access the TV channels via the internet

i want to put a tv in my kitchen where there is no aerial connection - i want to watch terrestrial channels - bbc etc what are my options

Of course you can watch a smart TV without an Ariel, but the Persil and Tide channels are more fun to watch on the round TV in the laundry.

Check in settings if there is an option to select antenna or cable.
Make sure that it is set to antenna,

You can watch Catch up and live tv ..
You can also get them and other stations on a phone or tablet and CAST to the tv .. !!!
