Home button and Touch ID not working

I am currently working on an iPhone 5s that has an unresponsive home button and Touch ID is not recognised.

I swapped the button with one from a donor phone, but the home button still won't work.

I managed to get the donor phone to start up with a new battery but neither button works on this either.

Is there a way to test these buttons?

I have ordered a new aftermarket button but it will mean Touch ID won't work anymore.

Touch Id won't work with any other button installed other than the one that came with the phone.

If the home button does not work at all and you already tried more than one try another charging port.

Still no good?

Unfortunately there is no feasible fix as the issue is caused by something on the board.

Thanks Ben. I'll order a charging port as well and see if that fixes it.

When looking through the ifixit guides, I notice that neither phone has the Touch ID bracket that sits on top of the cable connector. How important is this part?

Ah the metal cover for home button cable?

Not important really. Just stops it from being disconnected when the phone is bumped pretty hard or dropped.

Thanks Ben. Obviously someone has been there before…

This is unrelated slightly but in any repair on phones with touch id, if you managed to rip or tear the home button. Are you basically left to tell the person who owns the phone, yea your phones fixed but your touch id will no longer work? I always thought you could just swap it with a new button if it breaks in some way. I thought it was only iPhone 7's that was true. Good thing it's not difficult whatsoever to take a home button out

Yes any phone with Touch ID (5s and up). Once the original button is replaced, Touch ID no longer works.
