Why are there infinite updates?

This drives me absolutely crazy. I will at least 5 times daily, get a notification. updates failed to install. its always this Dell open print driver thing (my laptop is not even a dell, although 99% of the 450+ printers are dells.) which I uninstalled the PCL open print driver and still get this issue. including at home. And every time it is the same version.

"Dell - Printer - 4/21/2000 12:00:00 AM - 10.0.17046.1000"

loads, then successfully install only while settings is open in front of all windows.

But heres the weird part. it finishes updating, then gives me button to check for updates. Clicking it I get the same dell update. same version. (confirmed by my screenshots)

Sorry I only have windows on my dell and it’s not connected to internet so I don’t get updates. When I do connect it to internet it does install updates though.

Well. figured it out after microsofts hide update tool failed, @avanteguarde s idea did not work and searching and deleting all dell file.

what fixed it is, I just uninstalled dell printer 1710dn in device manager. (which happens to be a printer used often, so I'll deal with that later. hopefully.)

This one is actually easy to solve.

• First open a command prompt as an adminstrator. Type the command "chkdsk c: /offlinescanandfix" and press enter. Answer "Y" to restart and check the hard drive for errors.

• When it comes back, Hold SHIFT then Restart the computer

• The computer will restart into troubleshooting mode

• Choose Start up troubleshooting ( the one that mentions Safe Mode)

• Let the computer restart to the "Safe Mode" Menu. Choose Option "5".

Now in the real "Safe Mode".

Open a command prompt as an administrator.

Type "Start ." (start space period), to open an explorer window.

Delete the contents (not the actual folders) of the following folders:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Datastore.edb (this is a file)

C:\Windows\Temp

C:\Users\<your user>\AppData\Local\Temp

Now restart the computer back into normal windows.

Now that you are in February going into March, download and install this rollup file (match your x64 or x86):

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com...

Run Windows Update after this, and all should be well.

@avanteguarde it said update is already installed. I still have the issue.

I think the problem here is Dell released a non-compatible driver for a printer from the year 2000. So it will try to install, fail, rinse, repeat.

See if you can find an updated driver from the dell website, or report it to them via the dell community forum.

@evan I never got a notification on the bell for @avanteguarde s comment.
