Camera operating incredibly slowly

My Lumix DMC-ZS19 had worked great. Now it is operating very slowly: When I take a picture, the lens now stays open for a couple of minutes while it says it is “writing.” Even worse is when I try to playback-it takes forever to open (it just keeps saying “please wait”). These problems, especially latter, developed progressively, to the point where I now can’t play back or date stamp photos. The battery is charged. Please note: I did take over 600 photos on a recent trip (which are still on the 16GB memory card. Any thoughts?

Stick that memory card into your computer. Watch how long it takes the computer to 'map' the drive. I'll bet, thats the problem ! The larger the card, the slower it becomes.

Thanks. Camera is back to working OK now.

Hi Jonathan,

It sounds like a memory card issue and the camera is having trouble reading/writing to it. If this is a card you have used and erased many times, it could be that the memory card has degraded and requires replacement.

  • Try emptying out the memory card.
  • Try formatting the memory card.

Thanks much. I will try this (but how does one format the memory card?).

Make sure you back up your photos, as everything on the card will be erased. You can format the card in-camera by doing this:

1. Push the playback/record switch into record mode.

2. Press the menu button.

3. Look for [SETUP]. Press the menu button to enter it.

4. There should be 4-5 pages of options. Near the 5th page there should be a [FORMAT] option. Press the menu button to select it.

Wait.. wait... Not so fast... Read the comment earlier...

If the computer shows a error message, DO NOT "fix the problems". DO NOT try to view all the pics. Drag & drop the entire SD to your HD. Any bad files encountered, must be ignored. Those pictures are lost.

You might try the SD on another computer,,,, sometimes that works !

I recommend a new SD card. Should you choose, format the old card in-the-camera, NOT in the computer. Contrary to popular beliefs, camera formats are not all the same. You may end up here again.

Hope you didn't lose any/many snaps .....

I always tell people, buy two 8G, two 4G, two 2g, and two extra batteries.

( keyword is TWO )

One large SD card is never enough.
