As you say it may be a problem with the microphone or it may be that the voice inlet hole. located on the bottom of the phone next to the charge port is blocked with lint etc.

Use a strong light and a magnifying glass to check if this is a possibility.

If it is blocked (or even if you can’t tell) try using a vacuum cleaner to see if this clears the obstruction (if any). DO NOT use a pin or probe to try and clear the hole as you may damage the microphone which is located directly behind it.

If the microphone is faulty, it is available as a separate part or as part of the Dock Charging Flex Cable Assembly, (examples only). Search online for suppliers that suit you.

The microphone is shown on the Dock Charging board in Step.14 of the ifixit Démontage du Nokia Lumia 1520 guide.
