The late 2005 Power Mac G5 was introduced in October, and discontinued in August the next year. There were three configuration options, one dual core processor at 2.0 GHz, one dual core at 2.3 GHz with model number A1177, and one dual core dual processor (quad core) at 2.5 GHz.

Power Mac G5 will not boot instant off "Red Insert CPU LED"

I was given an old Power Mac G5 today. I have no idea what all is missing, I know the screws that hold down the CPU cooler. It only has one CPU, air cooler. Two led’s are on, the insert cpu one and the power trickle one. It tries to cut on, the light pulses real bright, then cuts off, then dimly lights on until reset.

Also, the checkstop flashes red once.

Serial number G8546BWWR6V

UPDATE:

I took it apart, cleaned it, dusted it, and all but one of the missing screws fell out from our from behind the power supply, so I cleaned it all, put it back together and put all back together and the red “Insert CPU” light is still on.

Also, I found the plastic cover, so the trickle charge light cuts off when it is inserted.

First see if you can find a serial number so we know exactly which machine you have. It may be located on the back where every thing plugs in or it maybe printed around the from opening when you remove the side panel.

@mayer Thank you. I will try and look myself. I am very unfamiliar with Macs. I have been a windows user my whole life, but I got into hackintoshing (ignore the legality,) and have been wanting a mac of some sort, especially an older mac like this one.

Here’s Apples Service Source PDF which give the full service instructions on your machine. This info used to be only given the Apple Stores and ASPs.

I have looked through before. There are two screws in the center of the CPU block that I did not tighten, though all others are. Now, when I pick up on the CPU block or push down on the center of the logic board next to the cpu, the fans spin and if I pick up or push hard enough, the check light cuts off unless I release pressure. BUT! the CPU light stays on. So, I guess there are some places not making contact on the board with the weirdly designed power supply and the CPU is bad.
