White Screen of Death! HELP!

My MacBook Pro 15” A1286, has been working flawlessly until a few days ago. Now when I go to turn it on it begins loading, then half way thru the loading process it turns to a white screen.

Ive tried each startup prompt, safe mode, single user, resetting PRAM/NVRAM, I was able to get to disk utility and attempt the reinstall of Mac OSX, but still upon startup I’m getting the same blank white screen. Miraculously I did manage to rescue all my files, thru typing a series of manual safe mode prompts I found in another forum that allowed me to to access me to login and access my desktop screen.

Can this be be as simple as a hard drive issue? I’m seeing mixed answers, some saying it could be hard drive, SSD wire, logic bord etc. Please help!

Have you changed the original hard drive. What OS X are you running? Did this start about a system upgrade?

I haven’t, my concern being the hard drive attempt and then finding out it’s not the fix and it’s logic board. If so it would be extremely expensive and likely not worth the repair. Im running latest update.

I’m wondering if it was a logic board issue, would I have even been able to get to my main screen to transfer files?

Your Macbook Pro model has been literally plagued by the graphic card failure which prompted a lawsuit years back and a very long standing callback repair program by Apple, ended in the beginning of 2017 if my memory doesn’t betray me. The symptoms you describe fit quite well into that picture, booting process hanging half way through being a typical one. Since you still manage to get to your Mac screen for the time being, you may try what is suggested here to disable your discrete graphic card, use the Archlinux boot disk method and follow the instructions..they are a bit complicated but with a little care you may be able to get your Mac back running again, no harm trying. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/for...

Here's a neat trick!

If the system can get into Target Disk Mode (FireWire & Thunderbolt Icons showing on screen you've proven the dedicated GPU has failed. That is you've been unable to boot up from a good boot drive.

The main white screen issue is not the logic board but the hard drive and hard drive I/R cable. This is especially true on your model. Pull the hard drive and use a USB to SATA adapter to hook the drive up and try a reboot and report your findings and we’ll go from there. Don’t Panic!

There really is no “White Screen of Death” on a Mac. Just the contrary, the white screen shows life! Now a black screen is a different story.

If you have access to a second Mac you can leverage its drive using Target Disk Mode. Here's more on it: Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode

Ok so I’ve removed the current hard drive and connected it via the external reader and started the Mac using option, it recognized the external drive but when I select the drive it again goes to the loading screen and then the white screen. Would this imply it’s a hard drive failure? If so, given that I cannot get to disk utility is cloning the drive not an option? What does this mean in terms of reinstalling OS?

You need a drive with a KNOWN good system on it to test your machine. With all that you have done to this you, we don't know if it is bootable or not. It may well be the GPU but I don't want to go there yet.
