Why is my WD My Passport Ultra become unusable a lot

Hello!

My WD 4tb Ultra drive is not working as expected. Suddenly it became undetected because the RAW error/Unmounted. I did format the drive and checked it for bad sectors and it passed the long check with no errors. before formatting I was able to recover all my 3.6 TB files with no problem at all using a data recovery software.

After formatting i used it again to transfer 300 GB files it became unusable again in the middle of the transfer. I was able again to retrieve all transferred data from the drive. This happened again after formatting and while transferring data.

The recovery software is able to recover and browse all data with 0 errors. so what is the problem and how i can fix it if possible.

OS: MacOS Mojave 10.14.4

The drive file system is HFS+

Have you tried another drive to see if the issue is exclusive to this drive.

It is exclusive to this drive. The problem first happened while i was using the drive in Parallels' windows 10 VM.

OK so other USB drives don't have a problem doing the exact same thing.

Options

VM's can be tricky! Unlike a dedicated OS VM OS's are dependent on both the base OS and the VM OS you are running the action in.

So disconnecting the drive within Windows doesn't clear the MacOS's connection and you also face the same issue the other way around if you disconnect the drive within MacOS while Windows is still running!

I would make sure your Parallels software is upto date and see if they have any reports of issues with Western Digital Passport drives. You might also contact Western Digital as well. If neither party has any info on this problem then I would assume the drive is failing and needs to be replaced. Is is still under warranty? I would get it replaced that way and you might want to double check if another Passport drive encounters the same issue.

After the first fail i never used the drive in a VM again but the problem keep returning. so maybe the drive is failing.

You can test the drive with a trial software DriveDX. It will give you health indicators and information about the drive.

I use it to check on w WD 4TB passport drives I use to backup my laptop.
