Can the screen be replaced?

I broke the retina screen on my air, and I’m curious to know if it’s replaceable and how difficult it would be.

In my case, three small particles resting on the shelf below the keyboard penetrated my screen when I carelessly snapped it shut the very same day I purchased my MBA. I've been using it with an external display ever since. I'm now considering buying a replacement screen on Alibaba, price $205. That's a whole lot less than Apple (about two-thirds). I hope the repair is self-doable! Time to read on ....

Sure it can be replaced but I’ve got no idea if you can find the part anywhere around, nor if the part is somehow paired to the Mac through the infamous T2 chip, maybe @danj already has some insight about it. Technically speaking there are no guides around yet, but connectors from the few teardown pictures remind me the one of Macbook A1534, thin and delicate flat cables easy to tear if one has no previous experience. Say goodbye to the good old days, easy repairs don’t belong to Apple world anymore. If you want to get a peak to the teardown to get an idea here’s the link:

While its not overly hard to replace the full display assembly its costly! You do need to get the correct one (getting the '18 version)

@danj I've noticed as of last couple of months that retina panels prices are coming down a bit whereas the lid assemblies are still sky high. With A1369 and A1466 lids around 300/350$ I'm a bit scared to hear the price for a 2018 assembly ;)

par

I would only replace the full assembly on the air's. Replacing the panel alone on the MacBook Pro's retina's are still a chore and if you don't have a clean box to work within, dust and hair are hard to avoid.

par

@danj I hear you, replacing retina panels only is tough and unless one has done a few replacements, chances are just to waste time and money or achieve very sloppy results, I've seen my share of those.

The going price on Alibaba for a screen is $205. Not sure whether that includes supporting assemblage or not. I'll inquire. Thanks for earlier comments. This is still a feisty machine, especially with Big Sur installed.

@arbaman I only need to replace the bezel. Where does one find reasonably priced replacements?

Thanks @danj, my local shop wants $500 to replace the lid and screen. I guess that's as good as it gets...!

@bobjacobson - How about posting an image of the damage, There might be a solution in your case if I understand where the damage is Ajout d'images à une réponse existante

@danj Okay, Dan, I'll do it in Add your answer.

I did take photos, but they're indistinct (see above). The top one shows the flash of my camera brightly; the actual contact marks that some object left and the bruised corner of the bezel are slightly visible. Pretty much the same for the second photo, which is a little out of focus. Apparently,, any damage to the bezel renders the entire screen inoperable. At least it is on my MBA. Thanks for your thoughts.

I uploaded one more photo, the top one of the three. You can see the few functioning pixels lighting up in the upper right corner of the screen. I have no idea how this damage occurred, as there were no items or objects on the keyboard to create this damage just from closing the lid. The rest of the screen is black, although it glows very dimly when I turn on the Mac, then it goes black except for these pixels. Or so it seems.

@bobjacobson That seems to me a retina panel..which part of it do you refer to with bezel ?

I’m having the same problem, although much bigger I think. My display has 3(!) cracks which take out 40% of the screen. In other words; the MB Air is useless.

Prices quoted to replace go indeed up to usd 450-500, and there is no alternative yet, as there is no ‘do it yourself’ manual.

I’m afraid I need to wait until a person with knowledge uploads a manual. (and the replacement screen is available to buy online)

True we don't have a written guide for this newer system, but! We do have a nice teardown which shows enough detail we can figure out how to remove the display assembly Vue éclatée du MacBook Air 13" Retina 2018 you'll notice the design is very similar to the MacBook Pro display! Remplacement de l'écran complet du MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar fin 2016 As we can see its not overly hard to replace! Here's the needed part:

MacBook Air 13" Retina Complete Display - Space Grey, 661-09733

MacBook Air 13" Retina Complete Display - Silver, 661-09734

You can find replacement screens online, but it's quite unlikely you'll ever see a replacement manual, unless on Youtube for soliciting purposes. This is not a user replaceable repair, chances to waste time and money in the attempt to are too high to run the risk of suggesting such repair and getting then blamed for a sloppy result. I wouldn't post a manual even if I was paid to, to be honest. You'll be suggested to replace the screen assembly, but that's a completely different thing with much higher costs. You can say goodbye to straightforward lcd replacements, but you can only write off Apple for such nonsensical approach.

Thanks on behalf of all MBA sufferers for this new information, Dan and Arbaman, If no Retina screen is available -- the two above are out of stock -- can I install a less acute 13" screen? Or is Retina required for the machine to function, and if so, where else could the part(s) be found? Maybe a way forward....

par

You need to stick with the retina screen, the interface the retina display use is iDP (eDP) unlike the older with is LVDS which is not compatible.

I would call TheBookYard to see if they still have one which is just not listed yet.

I can purchase a complete display (with gold lid) for a late 2018 Model A1932 Macbook Air on Alibaba for about $200, give or take $10, plus shipping from Hong Kong to the USA. Sounds reasonable to me. I'm familiar with the Mid-2012 Macbook Pro interior, so undaunted by attempting a Macbook Air display swap.

FYI, my local Mac indie store quoted me a price of $500 for the entire repair. So maybe a way to go, presuming that a new screen is required, is to hunt down local specialists beyond the Apple Store or Apple directly.
