Why won’t my iMac fully boot?

My iMac will come on with the Apple logo a spinning wheel and a loading bar. The bar takes around 30 minutes to fill and once it finally finishes the wheel keeps spinning for a couple seconds and then the whole thing shuts down and I have to start again. What do I do? Also when I was trying to work on it I accidentally screwed up something and now the lcd has a red/pink color. Any idea what that could be?

edit: Apple told me the first problem is a hardware problem but I’m not sure what the problem is because I haven’t been able to run diagnostic and I can’t install Mac OS on a new hdd. I think the cd drive might be bad not sure tho.

Are you able to get into Safe Mode? Press and hold the Shift (⇧) key when you reboot.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

When I hold shift it does the same thing as before.

@mrcrazy - Lets try this try booting up in Target Disk Mode holding the T key. Does that work? You should see a FireWire Icon on the screen.

It does sound like your drive is failing but the display having a red/pink color worries me as that would be a failing GPU and in this series the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU is soldered to the logic board.

Backlight failure is usually hinted at by a pink hue, but a loose connection to the display can also cause it.

I don’t think it’s cables because I’ve reconnected them multiple times. Is there anyway I can test if it’s backlight without buying a new one?

Hook up an external monitor to test the GPU

Ok I’ll try that not sure o have anything but hdmi tho
