iPhone 6s will not enter DFU or recovery mode

Hi all,

I’ve got an issue that I’m struggling to get to the bottom of.

A customer brought in an iPhone 6s that had a dead home button. He needed it replacing as the iPhone was disabled, and it is not possible to restore the device without this button. The customer asked me to erase and restore the iPhone when the repair was complete.

I replaced the home button without issue, and it worked fine since it would light-up the screen. I began my attempt to restore the iPhone, attempting to enter both DFU mode and recovery mode using the normal methods.

Attemping to enter recovery mode failed - the iPhone just booted as normal.

Attempting to enter DFU mode failed - although I released the lock button at the right time, the screen went black for a few seconds but continued booting.

I recognise that the lightning port might be the issue here, although it was charging just fine. However, my customer asked me to return the device, so I can’t do further testing. I suggested using iCloud to erase the device remotely, but he says it is offline. I believe it has a working SIM card in it.

Any input would be very appreciated,

James

The two most likely culprits of iPhone refusing to go recovery mode is a worn out cable / cheap / aftermarket cable or USB port is no good, always good to try another of the two, even a new cable if possible.

Worst case try another computer, I’ve had to do this a few times in the past a year ago but iTunes / 3UTools with drivers on Windows 10 seem stable for now.

Thanks for your reply. The USB port and cable are known-good, but I did try an official Apple cable as a sanity check.

I tried on my PC, Mac Mini, and the customer has also attempted on his system also.

Ok that pretty much rules out anything outside the phone. Can be either a bad charging port or charging chip. See if you get apple logo or display at least when the charger is plugged in but the battery is unplugged.

If you still get display for a moment with battery disconnected it's most likely going to be a bad charging port. If there is no display with battery disconnected and charger plugged in it's the charging chip.
