Late 2012 iMac CPU upgrade - 3770 or 3770s?

Hi everyone,

I use my Late 2012 iMac 27” 2.9 i5 mostly for music recording purposes. I've found I max it out really quickly due to only 4 threads.

While I do the SSD retrofit I want to update the CPU to an i7 (8 threads).

I'm actually a little confused on which i7 I should use. Originally the 27” had a i7 3770. However the 21.5” had the 3770s.

Which one will work, and which one will operate best for my machine.

Options

The 2012 27” system was sold with a 3.4 GHz i7-3770 and the 2012 21.5” system was sold with a 3.1 GHz i7-3770s.

Hopefully you can find a new 3.4 GHz i7-3770

@mayer - The confusion I suspect is not understanding the differences between the 27" Vs the smaller 21.5" system which uses S chips exclusively as well as the fact the 3770s runs at a slower clock.

So...the recommendation is to go for the 3770 or the 3770s?

The CPU Boss comparison shows the S is a better CPU however will it work in my system?
