Hi @theacook ,

The video cable may be damaged where it passes through the hinge area between the body of the laptop and the lid.

Here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop.

Scroll to p.116 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the display assembly.

This will allow you to inspect the video cable for any damage and also its’ connections to the motherboard and the display panel in case one is loose etc.

I am experiencing a similar problem too on Lenovo G500 but mine works fine when the screen is opened beyond 90 degrees and less than the screen flickers non-stop. Please help, what might be the problem? I cant keep on using it like that cause its at my disadvantage.

Hi Flameznstarz !

This is a connector problem between the motherboard and the display.

Disassembly of the computer for replacement of the connector will be necessary to solve the problem.

Hi @Tumelo Thabane.

Here’s the hardware maintenance manual for your laptop model.

Go to p.74 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the display panel.

This will allow you to check if the video cable is securely connected to at both the motherboard end and the LCD panel end. You can also check if it has been damage where it passes through the hinge to get from the lower case to the lid.

If the cable is damaged on p.91 Item #4 you will find the FRU number (part number) for the cable. Search online using the appropriate to your model variant, part number only to find suppliers that suit you best. There are two video cables shown in the manual. The part number is sometimes on the cable itself if you wish to verify that you’re getting the correct one.

@Tumelo Thabane

Did you check the cable from physical damage where it passes under the hinge?

If it looks OK either disconnect the cable at both ends and test every wire from end to end using an Ohmmeter to make sure that there is continuity even when flexing the cable or alternatively try connecting it all up again (without reassembling) so that you can gently flex the cable to see if the screen turns on and off.

you may not need to REMOVE the display. If you can remove the keyboard and access the display connectors on the motherboard. There may be 2 of them. One for the display and one for the backlight. If the backlight connector is loose and the light is going out you can shine a light onto the screen and see video information. If not it would be the video connection. If these are flat cable connectors, be careful with these connectors as there are relatively fragile. Follow the opening and closing procedure and do not force anything. Make sure to fully insert the cable end into the connector b4 closing.
