Thermal Sensor Necessary When Replacing HDD (Fusion Dr) in EMC 2639?

Hello,

I have a late 2013 / 27” / EMC 2639. It has a Fusion drive setup (128 SSD + 3TB HDD). The HDD has failed and I’m now running on an external HDD (restored from a Time Machine backup).

I’m planning on buying a Seagate BarraCuda ST3000DM007 to replace the failed drive (same size, speed, etc).

I’ve read (on this forum!) that Apple used custom firmware on their drives to allow temperature info to be sent to the OS.

Was this still in effect with my 2639? If so, am I correct that I need an external sensor such as the OWC in-line thermal sensor? I do want the fan speed to be controlled by the OS…

Thanks, Paul

You first need to break the Fusion Drive set following this guide: Split Your Fusion Drive Apart

And yes, you really do need the OWC in-line sensor.

Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow: Remplacement du disque dur de l'iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Don’t forget to get the iMac Opening Wheel or the full adhesive kit which comes with the needed tool. I do recommend getting a set of the Plastic Cards as well.

After installing the drive follow this guide to rebuild your Fusion Drive Setting Up a Fusion Drive on Your Current Mac
