Do i need a new upper case?

The edges of my upper case has several small strips missing from the edges of it, exposing small holes into the interior of my computer. Even though the cracks are small, I'm still slightly worried about dust getting in more easily along with other unwanted items. Should I spring the $100 to get it replaced?

The replacement upper case cracks aren't harmful to the computer, however, they look worse than a mouth full of missing teeth.

My suggestion to you, is to call Apple and ask them for a replacement. There is a somewhat unknown replacement program for the case chips and cracks. Alternatively, you could always buy the case part from ifixit. ;-)

The cracks/chips are usually caused by excessive pressure when resting hands on palmrest. The contact area between the bottom and top cases is very thin along the edges. - the unibody design resolves this. Sympathetic Mac Geniuses might still replace the top case on one of these older models for you as a warranty exception. The repair extension for "red stained" white MacBooks has long expired, but many a top case was covered under that program, and more tenured Geniuses may "hook you up"

Sadly, my closest Apple Store is 200 miles away, so calling them seems like the best option.

It's not from resting your hands on the palmrest. The cracks happen where the ridged on the lid impact the top case (the ridges keep the actual display surface from touching the keys, they're like spacers.) I've prevented this type of damage by applying self-stick felt dots next to the ridges on the lid to absorb some of the impact, and by counseling clients to close the lid gently instead of slapping it shut.

I have been researching this housing for our school district and found that Apple is the place to go for me.

If it is the "chip", "cracked", "dirty, filthy hand rests" - the part#922-7754 is the replacement, Version2. This one is for the macbooks that were Early/Late 2006. You can get one of the original housings except that it will continue to crack, get dirty, etc...

Version 2 is the better housing for your macbook. Because I work for the schools we get an education price. I guess googling 922-7754 or eBay you may find something in your price range. I would buy from iFixit except they do not carry the quantity I need (50+). I would however use their guide to install. Very good for old girls like me to put computers back together. Good luck!

If it is cracked along the edge near where your palms rest you be able to get it replaced under warranty. Several others have had the same issue. Try to visit an Apple Store and see if tehy'll replace it for free.

Definitely call Apple or go to an Apple store whether or not you are still under Apple Care. These cracked, chipped cases near the palm rest area are a "known issue" to Apple and they are very generous about replacing them. Good luck!

The cause of the cracks along the front edge (right where they'll hurt your palms the most) is from the plastic bumpers on the top case impacting the bottom case when the lid is closed. This weakens the plastic--you can see it on most MacBooks--and the strips eventually break completely off.

I've taken to attaching those little self-stick felt circles (usually found in a friendly green color) next to the plastic bumpers to absorb some of the impact. Also I advise my clients to close the lid gently rather than slapping it shut, in hopes that will help.

Yes, Apple will replace it if the computer is under warranty. I've had them turn down a few folks who were out of warranty. A new top case from ifixit is over $150 last I checked, so prevention is definitely worthwhile.

I grabbed a top case, keyboard, and track pad for my 13" MacBook from Ebay. Last count, they were anywhere from $129, to $35 on Ebay. Either brand new (in box), or used. You can find them reasonably priced there. I will post the part number for the keyboard/top case assembly a little later. Need to get a stuck cd out of my SuperDrive. FYI the part number I will post will be for the "Santa Rosa" style Apple Keyboard. I think the Santa Rosa has an Apple Logo on the command key (by the space bar). The other types simply say command under the symbol. You have to be careful, because the wrong top case, and keyboard will have a different ribbon to connect it to the logic board.
