Attaching the terminal block causes the breaker to blow.

The dryer was intermittently blowing the breaker. I tore it down and found a small ball chain that had come out of someone’s pocket and found its way to the heating element and shorted it to the case. After reassembly, the breaker blows immediately when turned on. If I take the terminal block housing off of the case and let it and the power wire hang free, the dryer runs and heats but opening the door does not interrupt the cycle.

I’ve torn it back down and can’t find any wires shorted or loose. It all seems normal. What am I missing? Did the little ball chain do some damage in the timer/control?
