Keyboard, membrane, dust/debris - What should I do?

I have noticed that there is dust/debris underneath my keys. Some of the silicone membrane is torn as well. Is there any way for me to clean my keyboard without opening up the device? Also, am I in trouble given the torn silicone? I am not experiencing sticky keys or any other keyboard issues, but would like to avoid such issues going forward. Thank you.

Emily,

With these newer MacBooks, the keyboards can sometimes be very problematic. The best way to clean the underside of the keys is to use a can of compressed air. You can buy some at Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Target, Amazon, etc.

To clean the keyboard, you will want to follow Apple’s guide: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205662

Hope this helps!

Hi Emily! Like Alex said, compressed air is the safest, easiest way to clean the butterfly keyboards. If you have a particularly debris-stricken key you can very carefully pry it up from the upper edge to remove the keycap before blasting it with air. I would only recommend that as a last resort though, since the clips holding the keys in place are very fragile so you may end up with a broken key unless you're extremely careful. :(
