How do I install 10.6 system upgrade?

I need to upgrade the system from 10.5.8 to 10.6. No firewire so no target mode. I hooked up my LaCie USB2/Firewire external drive and the profiler sees it but the DVD does not show up. Start up disk in System Preferences does not show it. Show CDs/DVD is on in the Finder preferences. I don't really want to buy the Apple external drive just to do this, as my LaCie has been great for everything else. Any ideas?

Options

Burn a copy of the installation disk to an SD card (or USB flash drive).

I'm sure you know how to copy the iso in DIsk Utility (or other equivalent) to an image.

Restore the dvd into flash drive or in External Hard drive through the Disk Utility . This is the best way to reinstall the mac on MAcbook air or to upgrade the Mac OSX. .
