Is my hard drive faulty? HELP!

I’ve decided to try and get my MacBook Pro up and running again as it’s just been sitting around for ages and I really enjoyed using it during university.

The only issue is a few of the keys are not responsive, including the space key & power button.

I’ve upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. And that worked fine but now it won’t get past the loading screen.

I think it’s a bad hard drive. It’s still the original and is nearly 10 years old….

I’ve attached some images of everything I could get from the machine in its current state.

Thanks!

getting a USB to SATA adapter:

Remove your internal hard drive, hook it up to the adapter and boot. This will tell you if the hard drive/IR cable needs to be replaced (using the 2012 model).

A new cable will also allow you to install an SSD 2.5” drive to get your machine running twice as fast. You will be able to boot from your old drive, format and install a system on the new drive and then use Migration Assistant your move your data.

Next hook up an external USB keyboard and see if the keys will work. Your machine may have received liquid damage and you may need to replace the keyboard. This is labor intensive but only costs about $20.

Hello, Thankyou for your comments. I’ve since been able to install an SSD drive and the MacBook now works great. I’m still waiting on the wire to see if I can salvage anything from the old faulty hard drive.

The issue is some of the keys & power button still don’t function. I’m 100% sure it’s not water damaged. So I’m assuming it’s a faulty keyboard ? Or could this be a Main board Issue ? I’m hoping not !!!!

Try any USB external keyboard and use the keys that are giving you problems. This will tell you if it is the keyboard or the logic board. My bet is on the keyboard.

Change that hard drive/IR cable out to the 2012!
