Swapped screens to troubleshoot, now both backlights not working

Hello everyone. I had a long night trying to figure this out, so any help would be highly appreciated! I also searched around for answer, but I couldn’t quite find an answer.

I bought a “no display” A1398 (Late 2013 15”). It had been damaged while the screen was being cleaned. I was getting video but no backlight. External display worked fine. I did some troubleshooting to determine the cause.

Eventually, I decided to swap the display of my other A1398 (also Late 2013 15”). And the screen lit up and worked normally! I was excited to know I was getting closer to a solution.

At that point I wanted to determine if it was the actual display or possibly the LVDS cable. I checked the cable (that connects to the display) on the faulty computer, and it was corroded on both ends. I then used the known working LVDS cable on the display that was not working. Nothing. At that point I knew I would need a new display.

I then put everything together again to their corresponding laptops, and now the originally  good computer is having the no backlight issue too.

I checked the connections and reseated them on both side. I also unplugged and plugged the battery. No luck.

The display side of the good cable now has some discoloration on the first pin and it looks like that corner is slightly chipped.

  • Did I burn up my good display, or should I just get a replacement LVDS cable? I’m totally bummed out either way.

Sounds like you burn’t the fuse link plugging in the bad display in. I generally test the backlight power lines before I start swapping displays around as I often find the bad displays LVDS connector is shorted out. What I find is people spray their screens with a cleaner and the cleaner drips down corroding the connections and often times shorting it out.

Which model do you have the IG or the DG version?

The one that was fully working is 11.3.

I would have to check the one with the original issue. I know it a Late 2013 15” 2.0ghz 8gb.

@jcrh305 - The 2.0 GHz would be one of the IG models. Apple produced both an IG and DG 2.3 GHz systems.

The logic boards are a bit different between them.

So based on that info, do you think a new LVDS cable would get the good computer back up and running? I check the connector on the display, and it seems intact. Just the cable seems a bit less than perfect.
