New 1 TB SSD installing

Hi..

My MacBook Pro late 2011 was acting very strange for a couple of days. When startup, it showed a grey screen with thin stripes, sometimes bluescreen with white thin stripes. It would shut down and start up again, but the satus bar only got half the way and then it was shutting down. So I thought it was the 500 GB SSD drive that was faulty, but the hardware test (cmd + D) didn’t show any fail! Suddenly today it was starting up perfectly!!!! I already got a new 1 TB SSD disc to install, so the question is….what could be wrong with the Mac and how do I use my timemachine backup (I have just performed a new backup) to the new 1 TB SSD disc that I planed to install..after all now I have it ;-)

Thanks everyone for reply…..hope the MacBook Pro still survives some years.

If Dan’s answer fails, it may be a known issue with the GPU on the 15” 2011 MBP. This can sometimes be resolved using a program that shuts down the discreet graphics on the GPU so the integrated is used. It’s call Gfxcard status, It can be downloaded here:

Replace the HD SATA cable! Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb. Use the better cable from the 2012 series MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here’s the guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable Replacement

So the startup failure is due to this cable..??!! I will try this fix and hope for the best ;-) A new Mac Book Air is horrible expensive here in Denmark, even the base model. Thanks again....

@tdnm - A very common issue! Don't crease the cable as that damages it as well.
