Will my mid 2007 iMac support this CPU?

I have been looking to upgrade my mid 2007 iMac with a better CPU suited for heavier tasks.

In search for a CPU that would fit the criteria of a CPU that would fit the iMac’s CPU socket type and design, I found an Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 3.06GHZ/1066MHZ (SLB48 Socket P/PGA478 CPU on eBay for about $40.

If you want more info on exactly which CPU I am talking about INTEL Core 2 Extreme X9100 in case you want a better idea of what I am talking about here.

All I want to know is whether or not if the my iMac can take it as a CPU or whether or not I need to do a Firmware update beforehand to make it work.

Thanks!

While the system can support the chip, I don’t think you will get enough performance benefit. You are still limited to the applications you are currently using.

Make sure you are running OS-X El Capitan (10.11.6) which is the highest your system will support.

As a matter of fact, I ALWAYS run macOS 10.11.6 on it. Another thing I thought I would mention that I forgot to mention in the description is my iMac only has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, so the core 2 extreme might be a significant upgrade because I am trying to modern apps that support higher processor speeds.

@duccmann - What apps are you thinking of ?

Final cut pro X, Games from steam like terraria (because terraria requires a better cpu than the 2.4 GHz CPU I have now), possibly pro tools because I own a license to it, amongst other things.

@duccmann - You need a bigger boat! Famous 'Jaws' quote.

Sadly, the Core 2 Duo are still not powerful enough you really need an i Series CPU and given the Final Cut Pro and gaming the GPU this series has won't cut it either if you are working on anything sizable or heavy graphical.

Sorry ;-{
