Dropped phone - Turns on but has no display

Hi :)

I have dropped my phone flat on the screen. It fell on the floor and after that the display went all black.

However, those are still working :

  • Charging light
  • Buttons
  • Touch screen (I managed to turn off my alarm with my finger)

I already dismantled it and verified if the connectors were well plugged : they are now and still no light… Have I missed something? Should I buy a new screen?

Many thanks !

Hi,

As a DIY repair all you can do is to change the display assembly and check.

Here’s the Ifixit Remplacement de l'écran AMOLED & vitre tactile du OnePlus 5T guide that will help you to do this.

Note: Ifixit has the display assembly available (click on parts in the guide)

Hello Jayeff,

If I understand, changing the screen is to you the only way?

@KasDing

The phone has an AMOLED screen so there is no separate backlighting for the display as the pixels provide their own light.

Whereas an LCD display uses backlighting and it may be a backlight power problem on the systemboard and not in the display assembly so you could try shining a torch at the screen to see if there are any images at all, just not seen because of no backlight proving the problem into the display or the board.

It's a shame that you can't get to the Settings and setup screen mirroring from the phone to a TV for example. that way you would know whether the problem is in the display or the systemboard.

To do board level fault finding to know whether the problem is in the display or the systemboard you would need the schematics (I can't find them online) and some test gear.

As I said for a DIY repair replacing the screen is the first best option. They're more fragile than the systemboard as for the phone being dropped that is ;-)

Argh ! Seems pretty clear... I will order a new screen then.

Many thanks to you @jayeff for all the time you spent answering me :)
