My trackpad doesn't work after spilling Coke on it.

Last night I spilled Coke on half of my chromebook. I immediately cleaned it up as best I could and held it upside down for 30 minutes. I turned it on and everything worked fine and I used it for 2 more hours. In the morning I turned it on and everything still worked fine. Some of the key were sticky and the trackpad still worked. I tryed to fix the keys by wiping a damp paper towel with soap on it because thats what my sis told me to do and the trackpad stopped working. I didnt put any water or soap on the trackpad.

I cant exactly stop using my chromebook for a week because I need it for school.

Please help me.

It isnt a software issue because it can still use an external mouse.

Hi,

The impurities in the liquid causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the laptop’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your laptop and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the laptop to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the laptop and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and liquids etc. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives that may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the laptop might possibly work correctly again.

It seems as though the trackpad may be damaged. If cleaning it and its connections etc with the alcohol doesn’t work it will have to be replaced. The trackpad is part of the upper case assembly. Search online for Dell TK87M to get results for suppliers that suit you best..

If this process seems too daunting, take your laptop to a reputable, professional laptop repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.
