iMac not powering on, but shows signs of life

Hi all,

I have an iMac that suddenly stopped powering on. It doesn’t post or chime, but the dvd drive does make noise, but that’s about it. It was working yesterday (although the hard drive has been failing for some time) anyways, I opened it up, tried without the hard drive, tried without the RAM, tried reseating it. I also tried without the PRAM battery. Status light 1 is always on, and 2 and 3 go on after the dvd drive makes noise. Light 4 never goes on.

Any suggestions?

The 4th diagnostic LED is tied to the display so if you have it disconnected it won’t lite up which would be to correct response. iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Diagnostic LED's

LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

If your sure you got all of the display cabled connected properly and they are working, then its tell you the T-CON board within the display has a problem or the Inverter.

@danj can I can confirm this by hooking up an external display? It just stopped working. I checked the diagnostics LED before disconnecting anything other than the bezel, so I'm pretty sure that this is the issue. Thanks.

@gaussymousy - worth a try!

@danj - Nothing. Does that mean that it is dead, or that the lcd wasn't the problem?

@gaussymousy - If the external isn't working then that pushes us to the logic board (GPU)

@danj - Could it be the power supply? I noticed that after the optical drive clicks, I can hear a faint on and off buzzing sound from the top left. It buzzes for about half a second, then goes away for half a second and repeats.
