Hi,
Is the answering machine turned on?
Does the answering machine answer an incoming call if you don't use the handset to answer the call i.e. can you hear the machine's pre recorded answer message when calling your phone number from another phone?
Here's the user guide for the phone. Go to p.20 to see how to set up the answer machine service in the phone.

The manual is not helpful.
What is the model number of your phone?
Not all Uniden models share the same menu setting options
The model number is: DECT 6.0 DECT1735+2 28002612
What problems are you having in setting up the answering system, as the manual seems to explain it reasonably well?
The manual is quite clear, however the machine does not always do what it has been set up to do. The manual is also missing a few little bits of description.

I bought a 1735 refurb that would not record messages on the answering machine. The handsets came already registered when the item was received. By deregistering all of the handsets, then reregistering them I got it to record messages. See the manual for instructions.
