Why did my laptop die?

I was in a middle of writing a document and it went well until the laptop died for no reason. I tried turning it on again and the power button went white to black and it doesn't turn on at all. I unplugged the charger and plugging it back again, still doesn't work. Checked on below of the laptop, I touched the surface and it was hot even if I had the cooling fan set up. I wasn't so sure if there's a problem inside the laptop.

It has been a day since my laptop died and I spent hours worrying. I need some huge help and support if possible. Thank you.

And you don't get any kind of lights on the laptop, or hear any sounds from the laptop when you plug it in and try to turn it on?

No. Literally nothing.

And is the battery still the same one that came with the laptop?

Hi @Joe Joest ,

If the laptop doesn't give any indication that the battery is charging when the charger is connected, first check that the charger is supplying 19.5V DC at the charger's plug. If not replace the charger.

If the charger is OK then perhaps there a problem with the laptop's DC-In jack, (supplier example only).

What can happen is that the centre +ve pin of the jack breaks internally and this opens the power path from the charger to the motherboard so that the battery can't be charged and eventually goes flat and the motherboard can't operate on the charger power.

You will need to dis-assemble the laptop to gain access to the DC-In jack and disconnect it from the motherboard and then use an Ohmmeter to test the +ve and -ve legs of the power path from the input side of the DC-In jack to the red and black wires of the cable plug connected to the output side of the jack.

If the jack is faulty it cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced. Search online using the appropriate to your particular version E6420 laptop (either Nvidia -J90M8 or Intel -CJ28J video) Dell part number for the jack as seen in the example above to find suppliers that suit you best.

Here's the service manual that will help. Go to p.100 to view the procedure to remove/replace the DC-In port (aka DC-In jack)
