NVMe M.2 SSD + NVMe adapter no longer recognized. MacBook Air A1466

The first installation of upgrade M.2 NVMe SSD with adapter was possible after updating the MacBook Air Firmware, years ago, installing macOS High Sierra which incorporated NVMe support.

All good for years: I use this Mac to prepare other M.2 NVMe SSD upgrades for users, with macOS pre-installed. Also to pre-install macOS on OSCOO ON900A SSD for other Mac users. (ON900A does not require M.2 NVMe adapter).

Interestingly, now MacBook Air does not recognize upgrade NVMe SSDs with adapter, and only recognizes original Apple SSDs and ON900A SSDs. I checked the M.2 adapters with NVMe SSD on a MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late-2015 and they are recognized, therefore it seems something changed in the MacBook Air A1466 Firmware.

Any experience or more information with this strange situation?

@flannelist - Any ideas?

Hm. My need some more details on this one since there are a few variables. What version of macOS are you running on both machines. Are they the same versions of macOS? Did you use the same adapter + SSD combo to test between both machines?

The MacBook Air recognizes SSDs via NVMe adapter again, without intervening firmware. A complete mystery.

Likely a bad connection with either the adapter to the logic board or the SSD inserted into the adapter.

This one of the sizable risks using an M.2 SSD. Make sure you backup religiously as you never know when the connection fails and that could introduce corruptions in your SSD.

Leaved the Mac off for a couple of days, then start up with cmd+option+p+r two times. That was all I did and M.2 SSD NVMe with adapter was recognized again. Thanks.
