Can I swap mobos for testing? MBP A1707 EMC 3072 and A1990 EMC 3215

Hi all,

I Have a MBP (A1707) that is not powering on and user wants to save their data on it. Don't know what's wrong and can't swap any parts, so was just going to try swapping the whole mobos in case the charging mechanism is broken, it may power on.. Just so I can try to copy the data. The mobos look very similar, same mounting holes.. If you're replacing the whole mobo, shouldn't be too much compatibility to worry about, no? Would appreciate if anyone has some insight! I just ordered a Torx set (needed smaller sizes anyway), so just looking into it before I try..

Thanks!

Sorry guy swapping logic boards won’t help you as the persons stuff is held within the logic board. Then to add to that the power button is married to the logic board and is the key to even access the data held within it. Checkout the Vue éclatée du MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar for all of the details on the system.

Even still you do have an out (a small one) Apple did design this system with a special port to gain access to the flash drive (SSD) using a special tool Special tool to recover users data

The rub is finding the tool and you need a second MacBook Pro to use the tool.

So instead of moving the logic board, I would review what is the problem if it’s not a bad logic board. Maybe by figuring out what’s truly wrong you might save the bacon! 😏

Thanks, for the tips didn't know they had a tool like that, maybe could do that to save the data but I doubt there's a receipt laying around for a 6+ year old laptop and Apple is always a pain for service - that article says they only help if you're under warranty anyway. I'm aware all the parts are integrated on one board, the only thing this workaround could help with is if the problem is somehow the computer can't charge but otherwise functional.. Besides that, we can't do anything and just trying to recover some data before shipping it for repair. I don't know anything about the problem other than a user handed it in and said it stopped powering on one day.. So either it's totally dead (at least dead enough that we can't/won't do anything about it since it's old anyway) or a chance of saving what's on there..

@Nick C - Time to use an inline power meter to see if the system is even accepting power. Sounds like you have either a dead battery and/or the power logic is messed up within the logic board. Give this vid a view to get to the heart of the matter! A1706 Macbook Pro 820-00239 not charging or turning on: but why?

As far as Apples tool you’ll find them for sale and no you don’t need to be Apple to use it.
